A rival to the finest in Cognac

Prior to his passing, Sydney Back set off with characteristic determination to not only alter legislative brandy production practices in South Africa but to discover the best methods of producing a fine brandy equivalent to the great Cognacs of France. Of course, the product needed to have its own distinctive flair too.

Not only did Rémy Martin assist with the initial blend but an alembic potstill was imported from Cognac directly and assembled on-site to ensure we achieved the highest of standards. Sydney’s perseverance and skill was recognised at the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London in 1995, where his first brandy release won the Domecq Trophy for the Best Brandy in the World.

Today, these practices continue with the use of the finest of processes, imported Limousin oak and the very same alembic potstill, situated right at the heart of the Backsberg Tasting Room.

Sydney Back Brandy is not only double-distilled, matured with care, and blended to perfection but it has
punch, heart and soul -  just like its namesake.
