We are proud to announce that Backsberg’s collaborative label, the 4 Pillars Shiraz, exclusively produced for Checkers SA, has once more shone – in this case, in the National Wine Challenge (NWC) 2020!
“Named after the four generations of Back family ownership, and the pillars to the entrance of our winery, this wine, and its Grand Cru status, is a testament to my family’s winemaking efforts over the past 104 years. We are incredibly proud of the entire Backsberg Team who were involved in its production”, says Simon Back, Owner and CEO.
Not only did this robust Shiraz, score a double-platinum award but it was ranked 4th overall, noted in the Top 100 Wines and received 1st in Class, or rather the title of Grand Cru Champion in the Shiraz category. This comes after having already been awarded a Double Gold award in the 2019 Michelangelo Wine Awards.
Alicia Rechner, Backsberg Winemaker states: “to receive a double-platinum award is an immense honour. Year on year, this particular vineyard block has shown great potential. Add minimal intervention during the winemaking process, careful consideration of varietal character and gentle oaking and you have a recipe for success. The 4 Pillars Shiraz is a true celebration of the Simonsberg-Paarl terroir.”
According to NWC, “given the nature of lockdown, it was of course not possible to host the annual celebratory fixture this year. A strong line up of well over five hundred fine wine entries made for a very competitive challenge, albeit in exceptionally difficult industry circumstances. Not a record number, but given the lockdowns, ban on sales, logistical issues to deliver and move wines and so on, we felt really very pleased with this result. Moreover, the wine quality this year was absolutely outstanding. It has brought out the best and this always makes for a great set of results.”
