BACKSBERG CARBON NEUTRAL

Asset 16@4x-8

At its heart, Backsberg’s philosophy remains to provide enjoyment to a broad range of wine lovers by sustainably crafting world-class quality wines. As South Africa’s first certified carbon-neutral winery (circa 2006), Backsberg Wines are crafted with the utmost of care; for the employee, the product, the land as well as our broader community.

Celebrating several generations of family ownership, and 107 years of quality winemaking, Backsberg continues to thrive by honouring the past whilst simultaneously forging ahead with forward-thinking holistic practices.

Efforts to assist in the carbon reduction and neutrality of the brand in its Fifth Generation continue and include the offsetting of carbon emissions in conjunction with Credible Carbon on projects such as the Kuyasa Project and via our own internal bamboo project.

We can now confidently declare that Backsberg Wines from the 2022 vintage onwards have been verified through a structured and detail-orientated third-party verification process and now bear the PAS 2060:2014 specification for the demonstration of carbon neutrality.

THE KUYASA PROJECT

Kuyasa is a low-carbon housing development in one of the poorest and most vulnerable corners of Khayelitsha, in the Western Cape. By 2014, the project had installed solar water heaters, ceilings, and compact fluorescent energy efficient lightbulbs in 2,100 homes.

Co-benefits of the project include reduced household expenditure on coal-fired electricity, local job creation, a reduction in local air pollution as well as support in an Early Childhood Develop project – setting up food gardens in the area.

BAMBOO PROJECT

Bamboo is a fast-growing grass species and, thus, via its fast growth trajectory, sequesters large amounts of carbon dioxide and releases oxygen back into the atmosphere. Our Mooiplaas farm, in the Eastern Cape, with suitable soils and climate serves its growth, local job creation and enterprise development.

Backsberg has suitably partnered with these entities to assist with social and sustainable endeavours.

STELLENBOSCH COMMUNITY RECYCLING

The project developer of the Stellenbosch Community Recycling project, CL Waste and Scrap Metal, assists local communities and local governments in realising the virtuous cycles between human and ecological wellbeing. One of the ways in which they do this is by enabling the establishment of local recycling operations, focused on community-based waste collectors or “waste–preneurs”, schools and local businesses in the Western Cape. These waste collectors, schools and businesses collect recycling, sells it to CL Waste and Scrap Metal who then further process and trades this recycling material that would otherwise end up in a municipal landfill and water bodies. Stellenbosch Community Recycling is one such project.

ADDITIONAL SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS

Backsberg has always been committed to the environment. From the use of a biomass boiler paired with a heat exchange chiller used in our previous cellar for cooling, to a prickly pear biomass programme on the original estate, a queen bee pollination programme in conjunction with the University of Stellenbosch, and even a tree planting scheme, Backsberg thrives by giving back. The brand additionally holds the following credentials and accolades:

  • Carbon neutral
  • 100% GMO Free
  • Suitable for vegans and vegetarians
  • 100% of our wines are sustainably and ethically crafted.
  • And so much more.
