Last weekend, 750 lady cyclists joined us at the farm for the Tread Lightly Women’s MTB Ride. The day was superb and cyclists loved the scenic routes and the chilled Tread Lightly wines at the finish.

We had a busy summer season at the farm and now that we are moving into winter, our Restaurant is serving up some hearty meals to satisfy winter appetites. Round this off with rich puddings that remind you of yesteryear and embrace all of these with a glass or two of Backsberg wine. Male sure to come an try our new winter menu.
This is bound to keep everyone comfortable through the winter months.

We have a varied à la carte menu, served from Monday to Saturday, that features traditional South African home-style meals and slow-cooked favourites, all made with fresh ingredients and our tried-and-trusted recipes. Our wine list offers all the Backsberg wines as well as some special wines only available at the farm. Your kids will feel at home too, with a jungle gym in the garden and loads of space to play.

Our traditional Karoo Lamb on the Spit is available every Sunday during the winter months, served with a selection of home-made breads, an assortment of salads, warm vegetables and Linda’s famous roast potatoes. This is followed by tea, coffee and a decadent spread of desserts and puddings.

Popular musician, Guy Feldman, will also be there to provide live guitar music and set the scene for a long lazy afternoon in the winelands.

Dr. Ramphele after delivering the Annual Smuts Hall Lecture

We are proud to be the official wine partner of Smuts Hall residence at the University of Cape Town. After staying in Smuts for two years whilst at UCT, I have a soft spot for the res, and have been happy to assist with supplying wine over the last few years.

Smuts host a number of top class events. Yesterday saw their Annual Smuts Hall lecture take place. Smuts were very lucky in having Dr Ramphele make the address.

Dr Ramphele has played a role in a number of fields, from being a medical doctor, to university executive, to heading up the World Bank. More recently she has focussed on launching Agang.

The 2013 Winter Sculpture Fair presented by MasterCard is taking place on 4 and 5 May 2013 at the NIROX Sculpture Park near the Cradle of Humankind, just outside Johannesburg and Pretoria.

A showcase of some of South Africa’s best contemporary sculpture, combined with the finest food and wine from the Franschhoek Wine Valley in the Western Cape, the Fair promises visitors an unmatched culinary and cultural day out in the country with friends and family.

“The Winter Sculpture Fair will provide the perfect city escape, giving visitors the rare opportunity to savour exquisite food and wine produced by Franschhoek’s top chefs and winemakers in the magnificent setting of NIROX – a highly acclaimed sculpture park situated in a 15 hectare private nature reserve,” says Ross Douglas, Director at Artlogic and event organiser.

Visitors can meander through the beautifully landscaped park, taking in the sculptures of the ‘After the Rainbow Nation: 2013’ exhibition. The exhibition has its origins in a local collection showcased by The Hague in 2012 as part of the city’s annual exposure of the art of sculpture from around the world. With the assistance of curator Mary-Jane Darrol, iconic works from The Hague have been brought back to South Africa, and supplemented with new pieces for this showing.

Visitors can also purchase a variety of cheeses, charcuterie, wines, and chocolates from leading Franschhoek producers at the Fair’s country market, just in time for winter, while a separate up-market retail area will give them the opportunity to buy exclusive whiskies, scarves, leather bags, books and more.

Deluxe lunches prepared by chefs from some of the country’s best restaurants – including Le Quartier Français, Pierneef a la Motte Restaurant , Reuben’s, and Cotage Fromage among others – can be purchased and enjoyed at picnic tables in the lush gardens. A host of award-winning wineries such as Backsberg,  Môreson, La Motte, Boekenhoutskloof, and Vrede en Lust to name a few will also be selling wine and bubbly by the glass or bottle.

After the success of last year’s event, this popular ride will offer a route geared for every fitness level ranging from a 5km course, to a 15km route for the more experienced rider and a 35km race for serious, competitive mountain ladies.

Female cyclists can enjoy the scenic farm roads through vineyards, orchards and forest areas, whilst testing their endurance on some steep climbs, fast descents and non-technical, single-track sections. The route is marshalled while the water point may offer a surprise or two.

Enjoy live music, food and wine at the finish and win fantastic prizes in the lucky draw. There will also be a prize for the best cycling outfit. Male riders are welcome to participate on the 5km course if accompanied by a child under 12!

During a formal dinner hosted by the Paarl Rotary Club, Michael Back, was named a Paul Harris Fellow.

The Paul Harris Fellow is awarded in recognition of an individual who has made a substantial and tangible contribution towards the betterment of the community or the country. The honour is bestowed on behalf of a Rotary International Club and is handed to persons who fulfil the Rotary Motto of “Service Above Self” within the community. Paul P Harris was the founding member of Rotary International in 1905 and the title of being a Fellow stems from sharing the founding members’ beliefs.

The award recognises Michael’s generosity and financial contribution towards community upliftment, and specifically the tertiary education of disadvantaged students over the last 30 years. Michael accepted the title with honour, saying: “This award has been made possible through the efforts of not only myself, but all who work at Backsberg. I am humbled to receive this award in the midst of people who contribute an extraordinary amount of time and energy for the good of others.”

Michael Back is among several other prominent South Africans who have received a Paul Harris Fellow, including, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Raymond Ackerman, George Bizos, and Nelson Mandela.
