The Art of Wine Tasting

There is something so distinguished about a wine connoisseur who has great knowledge of wine and can fully appreciate the art of wine tasting. 

At Backsberg, we believe that there is more to wine tasting than the swirl, sniff and sip. We believe in taking the time to appreciate the full essence of the tasting experience. Here are a few steps that will have you indulging in this noble grape like never before.

 

How to hold your glass:

Always hold the glass by the stem and not the bowl. If you hold the glass incorrectly, you risk heating the wine and thus altering the normal temperature it should be tasted at.

Tilt the glass slightly to see the hues and colour tones of the wine. The colour of the wine gives you a better sense of its age. A lighter colour indicates a younger wine while a deeper colour indicates an older and more mature wine. 

 

It’s all in the swirl:

You may love the look of swirling wine in a glass but do you really know why one completes this action?

Gently swirl your wine around your glass. You will be able to see “tears” or “legs” running down the sides. Thin “tears” or “legs” indicate a lighter bodied wine while thicker “tears” or “legs” indicate a fuller bodied wine. 

Light-bodied wines are known to be delicate, refined and easier on the palate. In contrast, full-bodied wines tend to be bolder, heavier and more powerful. 

 

Aromas on the nose:

An essential part of wine tasting is the aromatic experience. When you swirl wine in a glass it allows the wine to breathe and releases aromas that enhance your tasting experience. 

Simply place your nose very close to the glass, open your mouth slightly and take it all in, identifying each individual scent. Feel free to repeat the process several times but remember to take a short pause before each inhale. 

 

Sip your wine:

Finally, the moment you’ve been waiting for, tasting the wine. Sip the wine, hold it in your mouth and roll it over your tongue a few times before swallowing. Then take another sip but this time “chew the wine”. The drinker essentially coats the entire mouth with the wine and attempts  to determine the various notes. After this you may choose to spit out or swallow the wine.
