27 Jun An Encounter of Extraordinary Documentaries & Prestigious Wine
Hailed as one of the most captivating documentary film festivals in the country, the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival took place earlier this month in both Johannesburg and Cape Town. This year Backsberg Estate Cellars was, once again, proud to be associated with the festival as the official wine supplier as well as the benefactor of the distinguished Backsberg Audience Choice Awards.
Simon Back, CEO, of Backsberg says, “Every year Encounters offers audiences insights into the realities of worlds they are often not exposed to. As Backsberg it is an honour to be associated with a festival that seeks to shed light on stories that need to be told in our society. This year’s local and international documentaries were unparalleled and showcased local and international talent of an incredible standard”.
The winner of the distinguished Encounters Backsberg Audience Choice Award for the Best South African Film, voted for by festival attendees, went to Stroop: Journey into the Rhino Horn War by Susan Scott. The story follows two female filmmakers as they journey through the African bush and South-East Asia in search of answers to the reasons behind the slaughter of the world’s diminishing rhino population.
While the award for the Best International Documentary went to The Silence of Others, directed by Emmy-winning directors Almudena Carracedo and Robert Bahar and executive produced by the celebrated Pedro Almodóvar. The Spanish documentary centres on the struggle of a group of ageing victims of General Franco’s 40 year dictatorship who attempt to bring their former perpetrators to justice.
For the first time in the festival’s history, Backsberg provided a very unique wine tasting experience for festival attendees at Cape Town’s Labia Theatre. The informal tasting included four of Backsberg’s most exclusive wines: the Backsberg Sparkling Brut MCC, Backsberg Sauvignon Blanc, Backsberg Merlot and Backsberg Pumphouse Shiraz.
A massive congratulations to all the winners and participants of the Encounters festival who proved that local talent can compete on a world-class stage. Backsberg is proud to be associated with the highly esteemed festival and looks forward to supporting the important work of documentary filmmakers in South Africa in the future.
