Backsberg is pleased to be the official wine supplier to the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival, which runs from the 5th to the 15th of June 2014 in cinemas in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Backsberg had the honour of attending the premiering night, where the award-winning documentary film, Square, opened the event.

The night included a guest list of prominent South African film writers, producers, directors and key players in the documentary film industry. The foyer at the NuMetro V&A Waterfront bustled with activity as these invited guests rubbed shoulders, enjoyed canapés and celebrated with Backsberg wines. Albie Sachs held a captive audience as he opened the festival. His story is documented in Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and The New South Africa which explores the remarkable life of this award-winning author and Constitutional Court judge.

Backsberg Estate Cellars is proud to be associated with the festival. Fourth-generation Backsberg proprietor, Simon Back, notes: “We are incredibly excited to play a part in one of SA’s premier film events. Film and fine wine is the perfect pairing.” Before the film, the Encounters-Backsberg sponsorship video was aired to a public audience for the first time. Filmed during Harvest 2014, the clip shows a documentary-inspired story of the workers at Backsberg and the beauty of the vineyards around harvest time.

The 16th Encounters South African International Documentary Festival is Africa’s leading documentary festival and amongst the special features of the event are four world premieres from top SA filmmakers, namely Behind the Lens, Crumbs – Toppling the Bread Cartel, Diaries of a Dissident Poet, and Spring Queen. Topics that capture the atmosphere of today’s Africa are felt with themes such as ‘Africa Rising’ and 20 years of democracy’, which run throughout most films.

The Encounters South African International Documentary Festival runs until the 15th of June 2014. For more information on Encounters visit or on Makhulu Productions visit
