Off to Europe I Go

Dear readers, friends and fellow wine drinkers,

I am off to Europe.

I am going to be managing our exports, based out Sweden, for most of the year. Whilst I am not sure that Europe and the rest of the world has emerged fully out of the recession, I do think the worst is over. One might also argue that pushing hard on exports now with the strong Rand might not be the best option. All of that aside, I am convinced that pounding the pavements and being on the ground at the coalface of the various markets is the way to go.

It has been a busy two years being in charge of marketing at the farm. I have learnt a huge amount, and we have enjoyed strong growth in terms of marketing activities and effectiveness. The plan is to take those learnings and work with our respective importers in connecting the dots on the export front.

Pre- 2008/2009 we were quite content to take the view that once the wine was in the container and on the ship, it was the importer’s job to sell the wine. That model is no longer viable. Our view is that going forward we have to be more involved in the markets.

Why Sweden? My better half is Swedish. And she has an apartment in Stockholm. Need I say more.

So, on the South African front Harry Haddon will be managing our marketing effort, with support from myself. As always you can contact me on my email simon at backsberg.co.za or on Skype, which no doubt will be my new best friend, through ‘simonback’. If you are a Twitterer, find me in Tweetland here. And if you happen to be in Europe or passing by Sweden, please give me a shout.

So glad for you Simon but for us very sad. I will miss meeting you and listening to you and the wine tasting you did for our group was really superb. Our staff lunch at Backsberg on 19th Dec was fantastic with all of them bar ourselves never having been to a wine farm before – just can’t believe it but now they have.
We will miss you very much at the farm but wish you everything in Sweden.
We just got back from Norway and that was amazing too.

Thanks for your note Iris. Before you or I know it I will be back in SA. Glad to hear you staff lunch went well. I trust you will be attending the wine club harvest day on the 5th March… Be in touch. Simon

You are so welcome to Sweden, it’s been some years since I visited the vinyard on a wounderufl sunday with nice food and wine. Since then I been drinking Backsberg wines with that in mind.

    Welcome to the snow :)

Hi Niclas, thanks for your comment. Glad to hear you are still drinking Backsberg years down the line. It’s good to be in Sweden. This first week has actually been quite kind weather-wise. Let’s hope it continues. SB

  • Louis Moodie

    Hi Simon,
are you coasting along the pavements or zipping down the mountains on the ski-slopes? Envious if you are doing the latter. Visited Guillaume on Friday and Backsberg was packed with bus-load of visitors. Guillaume invited Maryke and myself to help with the “pars” one Saturday. Can’t wait to have the Sunday spit-braai lunch at your farm. Talk to you soon.

Hi Louis, beginning to coast along the pavements. Nice on re coming to harvest; you’ll soon see that we don’t just harvest the bottles of wine ready made. Take care, SB

    Hi Simon,

Neighbourly greetings! Good to hear you are settling in – I love Sweden, so enjoy and make the most of it.

News from home: We had our first rain for the Season, so let’s hope for a long wet Winter in Paarl.

All the best and I’ll certainly check in on you when next in Stockholm. Are you visiting VinExpo?

    Warm regards
